There are many ways to get involved: make a donation, volunteer to learn the art of bell ringing, or offer your labour to the project to help keep costs down.
This blog tells the story of the project and keeps readers informed of progress.Matt Gallonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659227843789499725noreply@blogger.comBlogger102125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-16369032151650985852018-01-26T16:02:00.002+00:002018-01-26T16:02:26.410+00:00Visiting Ringers on Saturday 3rd FebruaryA group of ringers, who are spending the weekend in this area, will ring the bells at St Peter's from 9.30am for an hour.
John Mulvey will collect it on 28th November. It has been hand painted by Maggie Willans of Bath. Maggie has produced such boards for churches all over the UK. She uses the same methods that have produced such commemorative boards for over the last two centuries.
This quarter peal lasted 40 minutes and was the first for Kevin Jackson ringing an inside bell for the method.

On Sunday prior to the Remembrance Service at st Peter's the bells were rung half muffled by local ringers.

There is a special bond between the present Year 6 pupils of the Manor School and these bells. It was the Year 6 pupils who in April 2016 saw our three new bells cast at John Taylor's bellfoundry in Loughborough. They also came up to the church the morning in late September 2016, when those same bells arrived in the village, to view the bells before they were hoisted up the tower.

It seems fitting that the bells should also ring out to wish them well for the next stage of their lives as they move onto secondary school.Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-18863674960922111842017-07-05T07:56:00.002+01:002017-07-05T07:56:59.332+01:00Hour Chimes Now in OperationLast night finishing at 12.20am Simon Adams and I completed the installation of the electronic control panel and wiring for the chime bell. This means that the hour will chime out between 8am and 9pm over the village. The chimes will be silenced over night.

The mechanism will also allow the bell to chime out before and after services.

So we are now looking for other people who would like to find out about bell ringing and perhaps join us and learn to ring. The intial stages of learning to ring involve one to one tuition so that you can master ringing a bell on your own. This can be timetabled to suit your free time. After you are competent with this stage you can then join the rest of the band for Thursday night practices.

The old 1713 treble bell in position .

The old 1713 Joseph Smith bell, which was taken out of the ring when the bells were augmented, has sat patiently on the belfry floor since the 3 new bells were put in last September. A combination of a decision to reposition where the bells was to be hung so that its chiming could be heard better and the fact that Taylor Bell Foundry has been inundated with work has meant that over seven months has past.

Finally two weeks ago Simon Adams from the foundry ably assisted by Tamworth ringers; Kevin Jackson, John Mulvey, Brian Taylor and John Wybrew spent a Saturday installing the new steelwork, hoisting the old bell and its clapper into position high up against the louvres.

It is hoped that within a few weeks the electronic control panel will be installed and the bell will be able to strike the hour and be used for chiming for services.

Secondly next Tuesday, 16th May we welcome to Drayton at 2pm "The Tuesday Band". This is a group of mainly retired people who meet on 3rd Tuesday of every month. They ring at one church in the morning, have lunch together, then ring at a further church in the afternoon. This group kindly donated to our bell appeal.Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-71807349279526151542017-03-22T13:42:00.001+00:002017-03-22T13:42:16.891+00:00New Beginners Join Us on Practice NightBoth Lynda Hayes and Paula Aston have now joined us at practice time on Thursday night. Ray Kneale and Jake Commander are gaining more confidence through spending more time on the end of a rope. Jake even comes along to join us at Tamworth church for practice on Wednesday nights.

Next Saturday morning a quarter peal will be attempted starting at 11am to mark the centenary of the death of Harry Clower in WWI. He is one of the six men from the village who died in WWI and whose names are inscribed on the smallest new bell. Harry grew up on his parent's farm, Hill Farm, in Drayton. In 1913 he emigrated to British Columbia, Canada. It was there that he joined up with the Canadian army and went to France. He lies buried there.
On 11th February we had a visit from a group of ringers from the Stafford area.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 22nd February there will be an atempt to ring a peal lasting about 2 1/2 hours . This will be in remembrance of another of the village men who died in WWI; Alfred William Ball. He died on 16th February 1917 and is buried in the town cemetery, Meaulte in France. He and his family worked at Drayton Manor for the Peel family. He had been a footman and his father was a groom. They lived at the lodge on Coleshill Road.

Jake, someone who learned to ring at Drayton on the 4 bells abour 15 years ago has joined us again. He has had a few lessons to get him used to ringing again and is now joining us on Thursday practice nights. Ray Kneale, who only started to learn bell ringing a few months ago, is also ringing with us on Thursday nights. In the next few weeks we will be joined on Thursday nights by two ladies; Linda Hayes and Paula Aston, who have been receiving lessons at Drayton since the new bells have been installed. Things are looking up!

This means that there are now vacancies for anyone else who would like to learn bell ringing. Ray Kneale has now got to the stage in learning where he is joining the Thursday practices in order to start ringing with others. Linda Hayes and Paula Aston are continuing their one to one bell handling lessons and are making good progress. Last week we welcomed back Jake who began to learn to ring on the 4 bells at Drayton a few years ago and then went to the USA. On hearing that bellringing had now started on our ring of six he has returned to brush up his style.

The New Year started with a visit from about 20 ringers from the Ashby area. Drayton was the first tower on a days outing to 6 churches. There were loads of compliments about how good the Drayton bells were.

Next Saturday, 14th January the Tamworth ringers will attempt a quarter peal to congratulate Mr Colin Bryan, CEO of Drayton Manor Theme Park, for being awarded an OBE for service to the community in the New Year's Honours List.

On Saturday 21st January a visiting band of ringers will attempt a full peal between 10am and 1pm to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Sam Tilling in Iraq during WWI. Sam was raised in the village and his name appears on the smallest bell, the WWI memorial bell.
A peal is considered as a "marathon" of bell ringing and usually rung to mark special occasions. The peal today of 5040 changes took 2 hours and 36 minutes to complete. The six ringers who took part in the peal consisted of the donor of the 3rd bell who rang it, another Tamworth bell ringer involved in teaching new ringers for Drayton and 3 members of the Lichfield & Walsall Archdeaconries Society who supported the project by pledging a grant of £4,000 to get the appeal started.

The link below shows you the details of the peal as it will appear in the bell ringers magazine "The Ringing World"
We have had two groups of ringers visit Drayton.

The first was a retired ringers group who meet every 1st Wednesday of the month to ring at different churches and to have lunch together. Any surplus money, after donating to the churches where they ring, is given to bell appeals. Drayton received £100 from their funds for our appeal.

Also on Saturday, 19th November, about 40 members of the Lichfield& Walsall Archdeaconries Society of Bell Ringers rang for 2 hours in the afternoon. They were then entertained in the WI Hall, by the Drayton ringers and friends, to chilli and jackets potatoes followed by delicious homemade cakes.

Two quarter peals (which last about 40 mins) have been rung on the bells. The first was rung half muffled on Armistice Day, 11th November beginning exactly at 11.02am. This was fitting as the treble is inscribed in memory of the 6 men from the village who lost their lives in WWI.

The second quarter peal was rung in remembrance of one of these men, John Forest, on the 100th anniversary of his death.

Bell ringing practices are now held on Thursday evenings when people are available so that the more experienced Drayton ringers can get practice on 6 bells. Other sessions are held for 1 to 1 teaching for raw recruits to suit their diaries.

The first full peal on the bells is being planned for sometime just before Christmas. This will last about 2 hours 40 minutes and will probably be commemorated by a peal board in the ringing room.Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-46691629520620939482016-12-05T11:47:00.003+00:002016-12-05T11:47:50.354+00:00Bell Dedication Service Photographs Below is a link to photographs taken by Kevin Jackson, many of them of the bell dedication service. Beforehand the bellhanger, Andrew Ogden, from Taylor's along with local volunteers set up the winches ready to hoist the bells up thye tower.

The bells arrived at about 10.30am. By that time a number of villagers had gathered to watch the bells arrive and to get an upclose view. The Penguin class from the Manor school also came across to see the new bells. Some of them, who had been in Y5 last year, had watched the bells being casted at the bellfoundry.

During the day, aided by many willing volunteers, the 3 bells were hoisted up into the belfry and sited in their pits. The next few days will see the task of mounting all the bell fittings such as wheels, clappers and rollers. Completion of the work will be followed by a test ring of the new bells which may take place on Thursday, depending on how easier things progress.Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-70924438963589935982016-09-23T09:44:00.003+01:002016-09-23T09:44:34.277+01:00Bells Ready for LoadingHere is a picture of our bells with their headstocks.
They are ready to be loaded on the lorry on Monday morning next, 26th September.
I've been told loading will start at 8am, so a 10am arrival in Drayton is possible.
John Taylor's Bellfounders of Loughborough have cast and polished the plaque that will hang over the tower door in the church porch.
It looks brilliant and a suitable conclusion to our appeal. The plaque has been kindly donated by Mr Colin Bryan, CEO of Drayton Manor Theme Park who gave the second bell in memory of his parents. He volunteered to learn to ring in order to make sure that the new bells are rung. He is now able to handle the bell on his own and gaining confidence. Well done.
I have at least 5 other people who wish to try out bell ringing when the bells are ringing again in the village. Anyone else wanting to have a go?Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-64127994084490398862016-09-11T11:47:00.000+01:002016-09-15T12:49:18.931+01:00Headstock in Memory of Don Hellmuth

Above is one of the new headstocks which will hold one of the new bells. It is inscribed in memory of Don Hellmuth, churchwarden of Drayton at the time of his death.

He was a strong supporter of the bell project and was at the meeting a few days before his death where the PCC agreed to order the new bells.Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5387904350845593511.post-22192175718814884122016-08-26T08:11:00.002+01:002016-08-26T08:11:59.053+01:00War Memorial Bell Receives Its HeadstockBelow is a picture showing the new treble (smallest) bell. It has been fitted with the reused headstock from the old treble bell. The old treble is going to be hung stationary and used as a clock and chime bell. It's also a chance to read the inscription on the other side of this bell.
Brian Reynolds, from the village, volunteered a few months ago to learn bell ringing so that he would be available to ring the new bells. He has been coming to St Editha's Tamworth for a few months now learning on a silenced bell. He little realised that it's not as simple as it looks. But after a great deal of perseverance yesterday he managed to ring some rounds and call changes on six bells using the simulator.Well done Brian!Bellringer Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08279109386644279606noreply@blogger.com0
